“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”— Mahatma Gandhi
I came across this quote years ago—just a random meme scrolling online—but it stopped me in my tracks. It made so much sense. That moment sparked a quiet realization: This is the kind of person I want to be. Someone who’s in alignment. Someone living her truth.
But here’s the thing—how can you live your truth if you don’t even know what it is?
That question led me to the concept of identifying core values. Not just the things you think sound good, but the deep-down, steady beliefs that guide the way you move through life.

What If Life Had a GPS?
Imagine heading out on a road trip with no map, no destination, and no idea what you’re driving toward. That’s how life can feel when you're unclear on your values. Your values act as your inner compass. They help you make decisions, build relationships, and create a life that feels right—even if it's not always easy.
When you’re clear on your values, your path becomes less chaotic and more intentional. That doesn’t mean every step will be smooth. But it does mean your direction will start to make sense.

What Are Values (and Why Do They Matter)?
Your values are the beliefs and principles that shape how you live, speak, and choose. They influence what you prioritize, how you respond to challenges, and the kind of energy you attract or repel.
Psychologist Steven Hayes, who created Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), found that living in alignment with your values leads to greater life satisfaction and less stress. When what you believe matches how you show up—it brings clarity and peace. There’s less internal friction and more flow.
Common Core Values You Might Resonate With
Integrity – Doing what’s right, whether or not anyone sees it.
Growth – Choosing to evolve and learn through life’s challenges.
Family – Prioritizing connection, presence, and love.
Health – Honoring your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Freedom – Having space to choose your path and live on your terms.
Spirituality – Staying connected to something deeper than yourself.
Compassion – Extending grace to others and yourself.
Authenticity – Showing up as your real self, without performance.
Resilience – Moving through hard seasons with courage and strength.
Gratitude – Remaining thankful and grounded in the present.
Service – Giving your time or gifts to help others.
Creativity – Expressing yourself through ideas, art, or innovation.
Accountability – Taking responsibility for your choices and actions.
How to Identify Your Core Values
If you’re unsure what your values are, you’re not alone. It’s not always obvious—especially when life is noisy or overwhelming. But there are ways to start tuning in.
1. Reflect on your peak moments. When did you feel most proud, connected, or alive? What value was being honored in that experience?
2. Pay attention to your triggers. What situations irritate or exhaust you? Those moments are touching a value that’s being ignored or violated.
3. Choose and prioritize. Make a list of words that resonate. Narrow it down to five that feel non-negotiable. These five are your guideposts. They’ll keep you grounded when life feels uncertain.
What Happens When You Live Out of Alignment?
Maybe you’ve felt exhausted in a job that "should" be fine. Or disconnected in a relationship that looks great on paper. That feeling of quiet discontent often comes from living out of alignment with your values.
For example, if you deeply value freedom but feel stuck in rigid systems or routines, there will be friction. Or if family is your top priority, but your current lifestyle leaves no time for presence—you’ll likely feel guilt, restlessness, or burnout.
The misalignment creates stress. The good news? Once you recognize it, you can shift.
Start Realigning (Gently)
You don’t need a total life overhaul. You just need to start noticing. Awareness is the first step toward alignment.
Ask yourself:
Where in my life do I feel off or disconnected?
What value might not be getting honored?
What small choice can I make this week to come back to myself?
Even small shifts can create a ripple of clarity and peace.
Final Reflection
Living with purpose isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about getting honest. It’s about noticing when something feels off, and being willing to course-correct. It’s about aligning your daily life with what actually matters to you—not what looks good, not what others expect.
When your values lead the way, your life becomes your own again.

If this post resonated with you, take a few moments today to reflect on your top values. Write them down. Sit with them. See how they show up (or don’t) in your everyday life.
And if you're feeling out of alignment, you’re not broken. You’re just being called to come back home to yourself.
To Peace and Alignment
